Starting a new school year can be daunting for many
children, but if on top of that you start at a new school, and you don’t speak
the school language it can be a challenge for even the most confident
children. In reception, there are, of course many new children and many of
those are just now beginning to learn English.
In class, we have been focusing on school routines, learning
basic words such as snack, lining up, drink, toilet etc. Now we are moving on to learning colours, numbers from one to ten and body parts. Most children can
already count to ten in their own language and this has been a learning
experience for me as well. I can now count a little in Japanese, I know what
apple and orange are called in Polish and nose in Czech!
