Using Mother Tongue in EAL

Working with the children in Reception is a learning experience for me too. Using our Mother Tongue helps when learning a new language. I have seen this in action when the children happily share their mother tongue with me. This week I have been learning a couple of Czech and Spanish words:

Diego had forgotten the word submarine and explained it as: "something that goes under the water." I told him it was called a submarine and he said: "It is a little bit similar in Spanish: submarino."

Ema is always eager to tell me words in Czech. A bicycle is a "kolo" and she said: "Blue is modry. In Czech is 'modri auto' (blue car).”

Erik has learned so much English this year but it doesn't bother him to throw in a German word if he doesn't know or remember the English one: "I did go in that airplane to 'Frankreich'" and "Clint look, now we can do the 'hinter' side."

You can also just make up your own words of course. Two children didn't know the word submarine. They called it a "boatfish", why not?
