It's Maths Week this week at the ISH and the Yr 1 EAL students have been doing some wonderful Maths thinking!
It can be hard to share your Maths thinking when you are learning a new language, so we are working hard to explore and remember the new Maths Vocabulary we see and hear about.
Take a look!
Here is our first problem!
Here we are trying to work it out.
We drew shoes on the dwarves and decided the answer was 14 shoes!
Here was our second problem.
We drew the houses under the days of the week.
Can you see our houses at the bottom of the picture?
We also did some reading of Maths books.
Here is a page from a book called
'Ten Fat Sausages'
Here Cristian is doing a great job of reading 'Ten Fat Sausages'
We also noticed a funny thing when we translated
the English word of 'sausage' into our Mother Tongues.
They sound a lot the same!!
This is why making connections in our Mother Tongues is so important.
It helps us remember new vocabulary.
This is called 'TRANSLANGUAGING!'
We also used our 'Monster Feet' to practise our Maths Vocab for 'one more' and 'one less'.
Have a look!
Then we practised using our Mother Tongue languages to talk about 'one more' and 'one less'. This is great for us because it helps us make connections between English and what we already know about numbers in our own language.
Portuguese
Russian
Dutch
Italian
Some of us played a game called 'Treasure Chest'.
In this game you have to collect jewels to make sets of 5 or sets of 10.
This is good for us because it helps us see different combinations that make 5,
like 3+2, 1+4, 5+0, 1+1+1+2 etc
There are 2 jewels inside the Treasure Chest and 3 jewels outside the Treasure Chest.
2 and 3 equals 5!
There are 2 jewels inside the Treasure Chest and 3 jewels outside the Treasure Chest.
2 and 3 equals 5!
We then talked about our combinations. Have a look!
Wow! So much Maths going on, and so much talking about Maths in English.
Keep talking about Maths concepts and vocabulary in your own languages at home.
This really helps us!!
