Labelling Creepy Crawlies in Year 1

This week we are finishing up our IPC unit 'Flowers and Insects' in year one. The children have been enthusiastically studying different types of insects and this week we decided to draw our favourite bugs and label them in English and in the children's home languages!

Since the beginning of the year we have introduced translanguaging skills to the children orally, now that the children can write we have begun to experiment with writing in their home language. This can be a little tricky, however, the children really enjoy it and feel proud of their work! This gives their languages equal status to English when displayed in the classroom.

George and Hao Ran wrote labels in Romanian and Mandarin. We discussed how interesting the words look when written in a different script!
