Mother tongue in Year 1 IPC Lessons

What a joy it is to see Mother Tongue time in action in year 1! Every Thursday morning our wonderful secondary helpers enjoy developing the younger children's home languages by participating in fun IPC activities together.

This is a great opportunity for the year one children to learn about new exciting concepts in their Mother Tongue(s). Developing new vocabulary in all of their languages helps the children to consolidate their learning and make connections between their languages strengthening their language repertoire.

So far this year, the children have explored 'Brainwaves' and 'Our World' with their older language partners. Activities have included:

  • Creating posters explaining what the brain needs to stay healthy in various home languages.
  • Making representations fo their world including their country their continent and their planet.
  • Designing a skyline of the city where they come from.
  • Learning about maps and how to draw a map of a zoo.
