Sentence Fragment? Complete Sentence? Run-On?

In Y4 EAL, we have been wrapping up our grammar lesson on sentence fragments, complete sentences and run-ons. This can be very difficult to distinguish. To help us understand, we have created foldables with our home languages. The visuals of each one really helped us create a picture in our minds how they look like. We have also referred to the anchor charts in the EAL room when discussing about them.

To help us practise more of what each one is, we played a game. In this game, students have to roll a die and move their player. Then, they have to pick up a task card. In the task card, there is a sentence. It is either a sentence fragment, complete sentence or run-on. If students get it correct, they get to stay in the space that they have rolled. If not, they have to move back to the previous space. Students also had to explain how they would fix the sentence if it was a run-on or fragment. This allows students to not only distinguish them, but also apply what they have learned at a higher level.

After doing this, students really got the hang of it and had lots of fun!

Who said grammar can't be fun? 😆
