Meet the EAL Team!

English as an Additional Language.

Children will be learning English to support their IPC units and Language Arts (Writing Workshop) learning in the main classroom. Learning a new language may take several
years as the academic language needed in school takes time to acquire. The EAL
programme is designed to help children acquire this academic language as quickly as
possible. A strong home language also supports the development of English, so please
keep up the opportunities for your child to talk about their IPC units in your home
language(s).

From year to year, students may move between being withdrawn and/or supported in
the classroom. This may happen when academic language demands become more
complex as they move up through the school.

At home, help your child with any home learning they have in English and new words they
want to practise. However, please remember your own language (home language) is really
important to support general language development. You can talk about your child’s school day,
share books with your children and sing songs in your home language.
