Houses and Homes in Reception

During the last couple of weeks we have welcomed several new children at the EAL table: Sarah, Rei, Yuna and Pravisha have all started recently and even though they don't speak very much English yet, they have been happy to join in our EAL activities.

Claudia and Victoria

Recently, we have started looking at houses and homes. We have been discussing the names of the different rooms in the house, their purpose and putting furniture into the appropriate rooms. The children are expanding their vocabulary related to this topic.

Simon and Anna

Ida and Saad
Here are a few quotes from the children:

Leonardo: "In my language we say cucina."
Rei: "This is bathroom. This is play room."
Simon pointed to the bedroom and said: "Schlafzimmer."
Lincoln said: "I have a bedroom. Everybody has a bedroom."
Yuna said: "That's play room."

Viola is sorting out the furniture in the bedroom
We have also been playing a bingo game with rooms of the house on the bingo boards and pieces of furniture on the bingo cards. The children liked this game and we had lots of fun talking about the purpose of the different rooms in the house. We have also been playing with the dolls house and the children had to put the furniture in the appropriate rooms.

They enjoyed this activity very much and told the teacher about their own houses too:

Sarah said: "Sink in the washroom."
Gabriela: "In my house I have this (toy oven) because I like to cook."
Leonardo: "In my house the first room is my bedroom. I've got two sinks in my house. In my language it is called divano (sofa)."
Anusha: "My house has got a living room for watching TV."
Luka: "My washing machine is upstairs, very upstairs. I will count how many beds in y house. We have five beds and one in the living room. It's a couch but you can sleep on it."
Dominic was happy with what he had done and said: "We have put everything in the right place."
