We hope you have all had a wonderful break. A few of our year groups are starting up new IPC topics. How can you best help your child at home with this? Check out the Year Blog and look at the vocabulary your child will be learning. Would you like your child to continue to expand their vocabulary in all of their languages, then this is how you can help your child:
How can I help to develop my child’s mother tongue(s) or identity
language(s) at home?
- Developing a language to higher
levels, requires quality input around school topics. Please check your
child’s year group blog on the school website to find out
what concepts will be covered each
week and have discussions with your children about
their learning in their mother
tongue.
- In years 2-6, encourage your child
to read books they enjoy in their mother tongue
and discuss them together. Record any
new vocabulary in a notebook or journal to refer back to, when writing or
speaking. In reception and year 1, read mother tongue books with your
child and discuss new words and the story events together.
- Explain your child’s homework
to them in their mother tongue. Allow them to find out about school topics
in their mother tongue(s). Let them complete their final work in English
with your support or the help of google translate.
- Encourage your child to make play
dates with children who speak your mother tongue or identity language.
- Skype regularly with relatives in
your home country to promote mother tongue importance and relevance.
- Watch films on netflix in your
mother tongue with the subtitles on to promote biliteracy. Documentaries
and nature shows promote academic vocabulary development as well.
- Discuss as a family why developing
your mother tongue is important in keeping their family/cultural roots and
accelerating their English learning.
