This week, in the Early Years, we looked at different books in the library. Besides listening to stories read by the teachers, children had the opportunity to look at books in their home languages.
Using Google Translate, we explored the books by scanning text on a page, highlighting them, and then using the speaker button to listen to the book in a particular home language. The children may not be able to read the stories, but they may listen and hear the sounds of their language.
Reading books to your children in your home language helps to strengthen it and supports the development of their English. The reading skills that your child develops in your home language will help them learn to read more easily in English. Our school library has a variety of books in more than 40 home languages. The next time your child visits the library, encourage them to borrow a book in their home language.
