Animals and habitats in Reception

The last couple weeks at the EAL table we have been talking about animals and habitats. We have discussed which animals live where it is cold and which animals live in hot places. We have had an interesting talk about polar bears and penguins: Do polar bears eat penguins, we wondered. We decided that polar bears do not eat penguins and one of the children had a lovely explanation: "Because it is not healthy!"
We have made a small display above the EAL table showing animals in hot and cold habitats.

Here are a few quotes from the children that I picked up while they were colouring and sorting the animals:

Gabriela wanted to put her animal in the hot habitat and asked: "Where is the sunshine?"
We had discussions about the animals and Despoina said: "That is not a puffin, that is a bird." It is difficult to colour a polar bear. Alexander said: "The polar bear is white. He is already white,"  but Viola suggested, "you can colour him with the colour white if you want to."
We talked about which colours to use and Leonardo said: "Also the sky is blue."
