Looking at Math Vocabulary in Y2

Last week, we were looking at Math vocabulary that the children need for their Math lesson in the classroom at the moment. It is important that they not only learn these words, but even more important is that they understand what they mean and know how to use these words.

Explaining and visualising these vocabulary words is great fun in EAL. In our different level groups we looked at the academic words below. It is important that the children's learning is not put on hold while learning English.

Below you can find the goals we are working on:

 Understand and use terms and vocabulary associated with position, direction and movement (under, over, behind, above, in front, next to, between, left, right, forward, backward, top, middle, bottom, inside, outside, quarter turn, half turn, location, clockwise, anticlockwise)

 Understand and use terms and vocabulary associated with measuring length (length, centimeter, height, length, distance, longer, taller, shorter, longest, tallest, shortest)

What can you do at home to help? Have a chat with your child in their Mother Tongue(s) about some of the Math words.

Have a nice day,

Mrs. Lara Rikers

Place positioning and prepositions means action! Mekhra and Alyona show they understand the meaning of the vocabulary we are learning.

The difference between up and down and how to demonstrate the meaning. Wonderful idea!
