Phonics in Year 6

This week in Year 6, one of the EAL groups has been working on the connection between sounds and spelling. So far, we have looked at three sounds: the 'short i' sound in words such as 'sit', 'in' and 'which', the 'short a' sound in e.g. 'hat', 'cat' and 'happy' and the 'short e' sound in words such as 'set', 'seven' and 'help'.

The children were set the task to look for words with these sounds:

Adam and Lucas were looking for the 'a' sound

Alanis and Alicia found many examples in their reading book

They found lots of words in one of their reading books:
