Year 1 - Retelling a Story 'Harry the Dirty Dog'

In Year 1 we have been working really hard to be able to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution in stories we are reading.  This helps us to be able to 'retell' a story after we have read it.

Why is this important?
Retelling stories helps us when we come to write our own stories.

• It helps us realise that our stories need to have characters, a place where the story takes place. 
• It also helps us remember that a story usually has a problem and a solution.
• It gives us a lot of different sorts of settings, characters, problems and solutions to choose from.  if we have read a story about a tiger, we might decide to put a tiger in our story.

These groups were watching a story called 'Harry the Dirty Dog'

Then we tried to work out who the characters were, what the settings were, what the problem was and what the solution was.
