At the ISH we believe that
it is important that we nurture, protect and help all languages grow. We also
find it very important that children can find books in their home languages
everywhere in our school. Besides that, research has shown us that it is
equally important to affirm identity to increase reading engagement. Last year
we have started gathering books that represent different cultures as well. It
is so important that our multicultural children can find themselves in our
books. Nothing is more powerful than finding someone that looks like you in a
book!
In Year 3 our students have looking at opinions, and sharing these in book reviews. In EAL we looked at various books and Eloise, Ewald, Elsa and Vincent voted to read ‘Pretty Salma, a Little Red Riding Hood Story from Africa’ by Niki Daly.
Afterwards they shared their opinion, and also explained and shared their reason for their rating.
