Trip to the butterfly farm!

Year 1 had a very exciting trip to the butterfly farm 'Vlinders aan de Vliet' in Leidschendam last Friday. This class trip provided the children with an excellent opportunity to consolidate their learning from the IPC unit 'Flowers and Insects' which they have busy learning about in the classroom and in EAL lessons over the last few weeks.

The children were encouraged to find and talk about the butterflies and their life cycle. This has really added to the EAL learners vocabulary. They used new words such as 'caterpillar, cocoon, wings, chrysalis and metamorphosis' to describe what they could see in real life!

As well as many beautiful butterflies, the children also met some very exotic animals for the first time! They learned new words, such as 'iguana, turtle, alligator, parrot and leaf insects.'

We were lucky to have some fantastic parent helpers who could communicate with our new English learners in their home language! Here is Amit from 1R speaking about his favourite animal (snakes!) with a parent in Hebrew!
