Year 5 - English sounds

In Year 5 we are learning about different sounds. This week we have been exploring the 'long i' sound that we find in words like "see", "read" and "even". Before we looked at words in English with that particular sound, I gave the children some time to think about their mother tongue and whether that particular sound also exists in their language. It turned out that all the children's mother tongues had a sound that was similar to the English 'long i'.

Rumyan showed us the difference between the
'short i' and the 'long i' in Bulgarian
Johana wrote words in Czech with the 'long i'
sound. In Czech the long i is written 'í'.

In the final activity the children were asked to sort words in order to find words that contained the 'long i' sound. It turned out that that there is not one particular letter that corresponds to the 'long i' sound in English.
