Year 6 - Guided Reading with Ms Brady

Our Year 6 guided reading group have been reading a comprehension on “kimbap”- Korean sushi roll in the form of an information text.  In our first lesson, we read through the text identifying difficult words and finding their meaning. We were focusing on comprehension of text.

In our second lessons we focused on specific information in the text.  We looked at how the text was written and found that the recipe was not written in an easy to read form, as it was the imbedded in the text. The group were then asked to find the vocabulary that made up the instruction for making the Kimbap.  We identified the ingredients and the steps for making the food.

We then started to write our own recipe by listing the ingredients we would use, in a more easily read format.

On our third lesson, we needed to rewrite our instructions in step format. Initially, we used play dough to make the different ingredients for our own Kimbap, which we really enjoyed.

Here is our recipe:
How to make *kimbap*
It is pretty easy to make a kimbap. It's just like a sushi.

Things you will need are
  • salted seaweed
  • cooked rice
  • shaved carrot
  • meat
1. You lay a sheet of seaweed on the bamboo mat.
2. Then put your cooked rice on but don't but too much.
3. Put all your other ingredients on top of the cooked rice.
4. Then roll it all together into a cylinder shape.
5. Gently cut it into pieces.
6. Put it on a plate then if you want you can add some sauce.

Enjoy your food

At the end of the lesson we enjoyed a feast of real sushi.
